10 reasons we're PROUD to be a White Oaks Eagle!
What Makes White Oaks Stand Out
See how White Oaks Levels UP!
Advanced Academics & Code UP exploration
The Advanced Academic Program at White Oaks Elementary School builds upon students' individual strengths and skills while maximizing academic potential. The Code UP grant provides an extension to the math curriculum and connects to advanced academics strategies. This program aims to increase student access to computer science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics experiences.
Purple Star School
White Oaks Elementary School is recognized as a Purple Star School for our commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families! We’re proud to host Blue Star Welcome week, Veterans Day Breakfast, and Celebration of the military child in April. Our POC provides resources that support families during their arrival and departure. We have military veterans that serve on staff and as volunteers. This includes “Captain,” who’s been volunteering with us now for an incredible 27 years! You can read more about our amazing volunteers here!
Opportunities for All Learners
We support every student’s individual learning style, from pre-K to grade 6, including our Multilingual Learners and special education students. 1/3 of our students speak two languages. We believe embracing different perspectives is a positive asset, allowing everyone to learn and grow by gaining insights. Annually, we celebrate our students’ experiences during our Multicultural event.
Igniting Curiosity
Our students can explore many different interests and passions, including environmental stewardship and WUWO-Morning News Crew. Students lead our Get2Green initiatives by raising ‘Trout in the classroom’, growing and maintaining gardens, and working to expand the recycling program. Our 6th grade students write, design, record, edit, and publish a morning news show every school day in our green room.
Dynamic Music Programs
Students have opportunities to join Strings (grades 4-6), Chorus (grades 5-6), and Band (grades 5-6). All students receive general music instruction, and 82% of our students participate in additional instrumental or vocal instruction during school hours. Their achievement is showcased at winter and spring concerts, Area festivals, Strings Extravaganza, Solo and Ensemble, and the FACE Solo competition. Guardians also have an opportunity to learn how to play an instrument as part of the FACE Parent Orchestra.
Student Leadership
White Oaks Elementary School believes in the power of developing student leaders through opportunities such as with the Student Council Organization (SCA), Student Patrols, and Get2Green team. Student Ambassadors provide new students with information about their school and create opportunities for students to connect with peers. Individuals work together to listen to student perspectives to share their voice, make recommendations, and work with staff to enhance the school.
Strong Family-School Partnership
We have been recognized as a National PTA School of Excellence. The White Oaks PTA sponsors numerous family events like the annual Eagle Trot, Movie Nights, Multicultural Night, and Spring Family Fun Fair. They provide multiple after school club options and fundraise to support student enrichment programs and technology that all of our students benefit from. Our board values community voice and shares your feedback with Family Vision Groups, SEPTA, and Leadership teams.
Ample After School Activities
White Oaks Elementary School offers a variety of after school activities, including STEM (iSTEAM, iCode, Lego, Science Magic), culinary (iCook), fine arts (IlluminART, Acting for Young People, Learn Now Music, Mudskippers Pottery), fitness (Runfit Kidz, Evolution Basketball, Yoga), and book club options.
Sparking Creativity
Art designed by students is highlighted in the National PTA Reflections Art Contest and showcased at the Lake Braddock Pyramid Art show. During our last renovation, students in every grade level designed three-dimensional artwork that was used to create collaborative murals, which were embedded into the wall designs throughout the building. Annually, students enjoy competing to see if their designs are selected to be published as the front or back cover of the yearbook, or on spirit-wear.
Tech driven Teaching
White Oaks is a Common Sense school, and is recognized for their commitment to helping students use technology responsibly. Students explore digital citizenship lessons, and are taught to think critically as they explore, develop, and communicate in a digital world. Our teachers leverage technology to deliver dynamic, collaborative learning opportunities.
White Oaks staff guide students to develop strength and skills while recognizing that a child's well-being is not just about academic achievement, but encompasses their physical, social-emotional, and cognitive development. We believe that helping to develop the whole child ensures they grow into a well-rounded individual with the skills and resilience needed to succeed in life. We strive to create partnerships with families, as working together is a key element to student success.
