November 18th 3-Hour Early Release for Staff Training

Monday, November 18th is a 3-hour early release for staff training.  Students will be dismissed at 1:05.  We encourage all parents/caregivers to have their student take their normal route home (bus, walk, kiss and ride) on early dismissal days. While these are designated as early release days — where necessary, we will ensure that every student has supervised activities at the school and returns home at the regular time if that is what works best for your family.

Let Us Know Your 11/18 Plan

For the upcoming early release on 11/18 we will ask each family to let us know their plan for dismissal for 11/18 and the remaining 3-hour early closing days this year.  Each parent or guardian will receive an email asking for this information during the coming week.  Please respond so that we have a safe and orderly dismissal on 11/18.  Remaining 3-hour early closings are 11/18, 2/10, 3/10, 4/21, and 5/12.  If we do not hear from parents by 11/14 regarding plans for 11/18, students cannot be released at 1:05 and parents will need to check students out in the main office after 1:20.

Schedule on 11/18

During the adjusted school day on 11/18, students will not have band and strings for this time.  We will alternate these specials for each 3-hour early closing and on the next early closing (2/10) we will have band and strings specials.  For students who are staying for supervision after the 1:05 dismissal, our FCPS Food Services is now providing snacks and students will go to the cafeteria to pick up snacks with their group at 1:30.  Other activities for students will be recess, reading, recreation, and computer time.

Make Up & Retake Picture Day is Thursday November 14th

Students who were absent on Fall Picture Day or who are new to White Oaks will have an opportunity to have pictures taken on 11/14.  Teachers will send students according to a schedule.  Students can also have a retake done on 11/14 and will need to return the original package to the photographer for the retake option.

Our Response to Cultivate a More Welcoming Community

During the first quarter, we have had several incidents involving members of our student body using hurtful words towards each other and demonstrating hateful language and actions in school that are against our SR&R and our goals to have a safe and inclusive school for all.  We have sent three letters to our community to notify them of:

  1. Use of a racial slur from one student towards another at recess

  2. Use of homophobic language and racial slurs in the cafeteria

  3. Anti Semitic actions and words used in classrooms and recess among our 6th grade students

Our Equity Team met this week to develop a plan.  We will:

Focus on cultivating a more welcoming environment among our students using The Power of Words protocol which will be delivered to 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students during grade level assemblies.  (Equity Specialists, Equity Team, Upper Grade Teachers)

Contact the ADL: No Place For Hate: https://www.noplaceforhate.org/ group to begin a conversation about bringing this program at White Oaks.  (Equity Team)

Facilitate the Diversity and Acceptance lessons in primary classrooms (Lynn and Jayne)

If you would like to participate and share in this effort, pleases contact Justine Klena [email protected] and Lynn Bush [email protected]  Ms. Bush is our Equity Lead for White Oaks

Guidance to Staff from Mrs. Klena

On Thursday, 10/31, I provided the guidance below to our staff:

We know there may be questions asked about Mr. Richardson and Ms. Chen.  We know they will not be returning to White Oaks Elementary School.  White Oaks is going to continue to be a safe and supportive place for our students.  Mrs. Klena will continue as our principal until the end of the year.  Mr. Bergquist decided to go to Robinson Secondary and we will have a new AP starting on Monday.  Her name is Ms. Quigley.  Ms. Jimenez is staying at White Oaks.

We are aware there is a lot of talk in our community, and we don’t have any more information to share. It is imperative the information above is what our staff shares with students.  Please use the language above if you have questions from students.

Thank you for your donations

We appreciate those who donated warm clothes for hurricane victims and created cards filled with hope.  Thank you!  We received hundreds of items this week.  Tomorrow Mr. Peek will be bringing donations to Asheville, N.C. to support families in need.  It's amazing what we can do when we come together.  This work supports FCPS Strategic Plan, Goal 3, and highlights the importance of global and ethical citizenship skills.

Principals Coffee 11/6: We'd like to hear from you

The next Principal Coffee has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 6th from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. in the library. During the Principal Coffee, Ms. Klena will share updates and information, and will also answer your questions, especially around their response to recent incidents that have occurred in our school that involve hate speech, slurs, and antisemitism. Please share any questions, suggestions, or concerns you want addressed during the meeting.

Does your child have a teacher who highly motivates students, understands individual needs, and instills a love for learning? Updates for the Week of 10/21

Dear White Oaks Parents and Guardians,

It has been a good week at White Oaks.  We saw some fun hats and costumes and interesting mismatched outfits.  Thank you to our SBTS (School Based Technology Support) Ms. Orr for spearheading the spirit week for Digital Citizenship.  During our Staff Development Day last Monday, we had presentations on mental health and wellness from our counselors and clinical staff and we had our Region 4 Equity Specialist present to staff on effective ways to address racial slurs and hate speech.  I am grateful for the dedication of our staff and their commitment to continue learning and considering new ways to support all of our students.

Here are some events at White Oaks for the coming week.

  • We have a 3 hour early dismissal on 10/21 and your homeroom teachers sent notices out about this over the last few weeks.  Thank you for letting us know your plans.
  • The SCA (Student Council Association) Officer Voting will take place on 10/22 and 10/23.  Students in grades 3-6 will have access to a Google Form in their Students Schoology course. Each student should complete the form once.  Lauren McCook will be working with teachers in 1st & 2nd grade to tally and collect student votes.  Voting closes at noon on 10/23.
  • Principal's Coffee Option 1 will be this week on Wednesday 10/23 from 9:30 - 10:30.  Option 2 will be on Tuesday 10/29 from 5:30 - 6:30.  This is an informal conversation where I will provide updates and consider your questions and ideas.

We are looking forward to another successful White Oaks Movie Night tonight.  What a wonderful tradition for our students and families.  The efforts to build community at White Oaks are clearly making a difference.

I'll see some of you outside soon!

Ms. Justine Klena

Don't Forget to Renew Your PTA Membership

As we gear up for our second quarter, we want to remind you to renew your PTA membership if you haven't already for the 2024-2025 school year. Your involvement is crucial to our community and supports our efforts in enhancing the educational experience for all our students. Why Your Membership Matters:

Advocacy: Your membership strengthens our voice when advocating for the needs of our children and schools.

Community: Join a network of parents and educators who share a common goal: fostering a positive and enriching environment for our children.

Programs & Events: Membership helps fund various programs, events, and resources that directly benefit our students.

What Your PTA Dollars Are Doing:

We're excited to share how your generous contributions have made a positive impact on our school community this quarter:

Teacher Appreciation: We've given teachers $50 gift cards ($50 x 72 = $3,600), to help stock their classrooms with essential supplies. This empowers them to create a more engaging learning environment.

Tech Upgrades: Thanks to your support, we've invested $4,600 in interactive touch modules and screenbeams, enhancing our teachers' ability to deliver dynamic lessons.

Warm Welcome: We hosted a well-attended breakfast to welcome the staff back, providing them with a nourishing start to the school year.

Movie Nights: Your PTA funds the movie license ($636), that brings fun and family-friendly films to our school during PTA hosted movie nights.

Communication Tools: We've subscribed to PTBoard ($130) to host our website, keeping our community informed and connected.

Teacher Recognition: Throughout the year, we'll be honoring our dedicated staff with gift cards ($3,000), to show our appreciation.

BrainPOP: The PTA supports the school by paying this yearly subscription fee to provide educational resources to the students ($3,000).

Looking Ahead:

Student Scholarships: We're committed to supporting students' participation in after-school clubs through scholarships.

Staff Appreciation: We're planning a special breakfast or lunch to celebrate our hardworking staff, this continues throughout the year and culminates in a week of recognition in May.

Burke School: A donation to support the Burke School with $1,000 to help supply items for student recognition.

You can already see the wonderful things we were able to accomplish this first quarter and these contributions makes a real difference. Important Safety Reminders During Arrival and Dismissal

Dear White Oaks Parents and Guardians,

We are asking our families to review some safety reminders for arrival and dismissal time.  If everyone pays close attention and exercises abundant caution, it will help alleviate concerns and prevent accidents.  We all want to feel confident that the students and their caregivers and our staff are able to safely approach and leave our school.

  • We have a uniformed police officer crossing students at Shiplett.  Please go to that crosswalk when crossing the busy street.
  • Staff are assigned to specific locations outside during arrival and dismissal. Pay attention to their guidance.
  • We have staff assisting those who are crossing the driveway into the side parking lot and the bus lot.  Please pay attention to their direction.  I have asked them to wear safety vests and hold signs so that they are noticed by drivers.
  • Please be attentive and courteous when approaching and driving through the campus.   We have heard some concerns about illegal U-turns being made on Shiplett and some who are driving students to school are parking in the driveway access.  We will continue to monitor this and we will notify our police officer and ask that this activity be monitored and tickets issued when warranted.

Thank you for taking the time to review these reminders.  Please share with neighbors and friends so the word gets out. Please always drive slowly, always pay attention, and be courteous!  Thank you,

Ms. Klena, Ms. Jimenez, and Mr. Bergquist

Digital Citizenship Week

Digital Citizenship week is October 14-18th. FCPS has teamed with Common Sense Media to provide lessons that will include and discuss real challenges and digital dilemmas that students face today, teaching them the skills they need to succeed as digital learners, leaders and citizens of tomorrow. If you would like to continue discussions at home with your family, additional resources are in the Parents/Guardians: White Oaks Elementary School Schoology site, located under Family Resources. Students will celebrate Digital Citizenship week with spirit. Our spirit days are: 10/15 - Tuesday - Mismatch Day 10/16 - Wednesday - Workout Day 10/17 - Thursday - Hat Day 10/18 - Friday - Superhero Day

10/21 Early Dismissal Details

On Monday, 10/21, dismissal will be three hours early, beginning at 1:05 p.m. We encourage all parents/caregivers to have their student take their normal route home (bus, walk, kiss and ride) on early dismissal days. While these are designated as early release days — where necessary, we will ensure that every student has supervised activities at the school and returns home at the regular time if that is what works best for your family.  There will be bus transportation at 4:05 with the normal bus routes.  SAAC will be open for PM families starting at 1:05.

This week, homeroom teachers will send an email via Talking Points asking each parent to respond with their plan for the early release day.  All plans will be finalized by Wednesday 10/16.  Please review these important details:

  • To ensure safety for each student, parents/caregivers must notify the homeroom teacher if they plan to have their child leave school at 1:05 via bus, kiss & ride or walking by 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday 10/16.
  • Teachers will submit plans to administration for each student by 4:30 p.m. on 10/16 and they will not be able to change intentions for their students after 10/16.
  • Students will only be released at 1:05 if we have heard from parents by the deadline of 10/16.
  • If parents have an emergency and need to pick students who are being supervised at school after 1:05, they will have to come pick up their student and cannot rely on the school bus to take a student home.

Attendance Focus Continues at White Oaks

Dear White Oaks Families,

When we look at our attendance rates at White Oaks Elementary School, we are noticing that absences can often be due to family trips that are planned during school days.  We want to share some tips with our families to help students see the importance of attending school every day.  Here are some tips for families to consider when planning trips:

  • We recognize that holidays are an important time for reconnecting with families far away and exposing your children to your home and language, whether you grew up in another part of the United States or a different country. The price of plane tickets often influences when you want to travel. But keep in mind the costs to your children’s education if they miss too much school.
  • Make sure your child is in school every day, right up until vacation starts.  Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning.  But it’s harder to teach and it’s harder to learn when too many students are absent.

Important Attendance Information

Dear White Oaks Families,

School is underway and this is a good time to share the importance of school attendance.  Our goal as a division and as a school is to ensure we are taking steps to reduce chronic absenteeism.  Elementary school students who are absent for 18 days in the school year are considered chronically absent.  This includes excused and unexcused absences.  The FCPS  Elementary School Attendance Page   has helpful information and guidance for parents about the importance of regular attendance.  We are also providing the FCPS Form  that must be submitted to request a prearranged absence.  There are limited situations that would warrant approval of a prearranged absence.  Thank you for reviewing this important information and we also welcome your questions.

Ms. Klena, Ms. Jimenez, and Mr. Bergquist

Student Birthday Celebrations

For health and safety reasons,  and to avoid the possibility of a serious allergic reaction, we will continue the prohibition of parents bringing food to share into classrooms or the cafeteria.  This includes for birthday celebrations at White Oaks Elementary School.  Our teachers will be encouraged to continue to share birthday wishes for students on their special day and if parents would like to send in a small item, such as a pencil, sticker, or eraser, for each student in the classroom, we can continue this tradition at White Oaks.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3-12 in October and again in February or March. It addresses skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create the learning, experiences, and environments students need to be successful. You may contact our counselors, Ms. Lynn Bush ([email protected]) or Ms. Jayne Mejia ([email protected]) with questions.

Message from Administration

This year, classroom teachers are starting with new curriculum in math and language arts.  You can see more about the FCPS elementary curriculum on the public website.  https://www.fcps.edu/academics/curriculum/subject-area As we visit classrooms, we have seen teachers using the resources and assessments and instructing students in the new standards and guidelines to promote each students' academic growth.  We appreciate how much time it takes for our teachers to assimilate new approaches and content into their classroom instruction.  White Oaks teachers are very dedicated and professional in their work.  We wanted to give them a shout out this week.

Ms. Klena, Ms. Jimenez, and Mr. Bergquist

Important Reminders for Students

During the next two weeks, administrators will meet with students in their homerooms or grade level assemblies to review important information in the Student Rights and Responsibilities for FCPS Students.

This review comes at a good time for our upper grades as we have had a few instances of bathroom vandalism this week.  Our custodians have had to repair equipment in the bathroom stalls and clean wet paper towels stuck to the walls.  We can solve this problem together as we partner with our families to remind the students that we expect everyone to be considerate of the school facility and the importance of following our code of conduct.  Our teachers are monitoring and helping students with maintaining good citizenship.  If your students sees something, we encourage you to let them know to say something to you or a staff member at White Oaks.

Veterans Breakfast

We are planning the annual veterans breakfast again this year with Ms. Gridneva (music teacher). Last year the media was contacted and did a special on White Oaks through the local news and FCPS. The committee would like to do this again. I found out the media outreach specialist is Steven Brasley [email protected] . The VB was showcased last year due to the numerous staff who are veterans and of course, Captain. Since there are very strict protocols around outreach and media we wanted to seek your approval. Here is last years FCPS media piece: https://whiteoakses.fcps.edu/features/91-year-old-volunteer-among-veterans-honored-white-oaks-elementary and https://www.fox5dc.com/news/fairfax-county-elementary-school-honors-veterans-with-special-breakfast

A Note of Appreciation

We want to thank our White Oaks teachers for hosting the Back to School Night sessions this week.  As we walked the halls and greeted parents, we heard how much our families appreciate the work our teachers do.  Thank you for sharing your gratitude.  It makes a difference.  We also  appreciate the partnership between parents and staff at White Oaks.  It is abundantly evident to your current administration that our school is greatly supported by parents and we are thankful.

We hope you all have a good weekend.

Ms. Klena, Ms. Jimenez, and Mr. Bergquist

Important Reminders from the Administration

As we begin the 5th week of school on Monday, we are sharing some reminders about arrival and dismissal.

No Pets on School Grounds: For our families who walk their students up to the school with a pet, please keep pets off the school grounds.  This is a health notice and we also want to be sure all of our students can walk up to the entrances safely.

Morning Drop Off: We are very proud of our White Oaks Eagles for making a smooth transition back to school.  By now, our students in Kindergarten through 6th grade can walk to their classrooms and we want our parents and guardians to wave goodbye at the door.  For the younger students, there are many adults to help when needed.

Monday 9/16 Early Closing

The first dismissal on our early closing day is at 1:05.  Only students whose parents notified us that they want them to go home early will be released at 1:05.  Busses will run at 1:05. All other students will stay at White Oaks for supervised activities until regular dismissal time.  At 4:05 we will have our busses as usual and students will be released to travel home as they usually do.

Message from WOES Administrators

Dear Students and Parents,

We want to take this opportunity to thank you for all you have done to support the White Oaks community during the first week of school.  Our goal is to ensure we support the staff and students at White Oaks Elementary School so that it is a great place to work and learn and our parents, guardians, and families clearly make a positive and significant impact in this pursuit.   We also want to share our impressions as the current administrative team for your school.  Students had a good week at White Oaks.  We saw wonderful interactions between students and teachers and staff and we noticed how the teachers had thorough plans and exciting activities for the students from the very first day.  There is a clear commitment to teamwork and we see staff, students and parents supporting each other.    We have heard numerous times, "We are a family at White Oaks Elementary!"  Our commitment is to continue to support the staff so they have what they need to provide for every child.  We will continue to offer opportunities for our families to maintain strong connections with our school team and teachers.

The Eagle News will continue to be sent out weekly and will include important school news as well as messages from our PTA.

We look forward to seeing you soon.  Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or requests as we start the 24-25 school year.

Sincerely,

Ms. Klena, Interim Principal, [email protected]

Ms. Jimenez, Assistant Principal,[email protected]

Mr. Bergquist, Interim Assistant Principal, [email protected]

Dear White Oaks Families,

As the summer winds down, we are busy preparing for an exciting new school year. Our staff is diligently working to create welcoming and stimulating classrooms for your children. The first day of school is almost here, and the entire WOES staff are eager to reconnect with our amazing students. To help you prepare for the upcoming school year, we’ve gathered some important information that you will find below.

We appreciate your continued partnership in your child's education and get ready for a year filled with learning, growth, and fun!

Ryan Richardson, Principal

Dana Chen, Assistant Principal

Kyle Jimenez, Assistant Principal

Welcome, Kyle Jimenez!

Please join us in welcoming our new Assistant Principal, Kyle Jimenez, who joins us from Baileys Primary Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences.

She is a proud resident of Region 4 and a triple-Hoo, having graduated from the University of Virginia's College of Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Education, and ACC. She is entering her 20th year in the wonderful world of education and has loved every one of the diverse assignments she has held both in Fairfax County and abroad. She could talk all day about equity, etymology, and attendance initiatives and will step up to bat for trivia night, athletic events (played or spectated), or karaoke, no questions asked.

It is clear that Kyle has had a positive impact on students, staff, and families both academically and social emotionally.  Kyle is bringing a wealth of knowledge and experiences to White Oaks that will contribute to the mission of our school and will strengthen the success of all who walk through our doors.  Kyle is ready and eager to get to know our eagle community and support the great work that occurs daily at WOES. Kyle will officially begin her work here on August 14th.

Class Placements

Class placement emails will be sent out tomorrow, August 9th, at 4pm.

Important Dates Early Release Mondays - Survey

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 16
  • October 21
  • November 18
  • February 10
  • March 10
  • April 21
  • May 12

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/SJBAxfLbcpzgZ43i9 for each of your children who are enrolled at White Oaks Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 16, 2024 and October 21, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.
